The book "Restorative Justice and the Secure Estate: Alternatives for young people in custody" presents the results of the UK research project which was conducted by the Independent Academic Research Studies, led by the book's author, Dr. Theo Gavrielides, as part of the 3 year (2009-2011) project "Mediation and Restorative Justice in Prison Settings" (MEREPS) which was funded by the European Commission.

The book aims to present an updated overview of Restorative Justice (RJ) in prison settings, with a special focus on the use of RJ practices with young people in custody. The book also posits key-recommendations for a successful strategy for RJ in the secure estate. Furthermore, it deals with issues related to the theoretical framework, legislation, implementation, research and evaluation of restorative justice in the secure estate internationally.
